The Project

What we built and why

Schwarzpappelhof is a seminar, healing, cultural, and guest house set on the edge of a village in the Westerwald, Germany — in the Rhein-Westerwald Nature Park. Run by Christine Schmücker and Anette Berg, the property offers seminar rooms, a fully equipped guest house, a retreat area in a farmhouse garden with a natural pond, and a creative space for artists and groups.
The site needed to reflect the calm, organic character of the place — warm, unhurried, rooted in nature — while handling real functional requirements: showcasing four distinct use types (Seminarhaus, Gästehaus, Kreativ-Ort, Retreats), displaying upcoming courses and events in a structured calendar, and handling booking enquiries in German.
We handled the full development using Divi as the build framework, and where Divi’s native capabilities weren’t sufficient — particularly for the events and calendar functionality — we developed custom plugins to achieve exactly what the client needed.

Design Process

How we approached it

Schwarzpappelhof required a design approach that matched the property's identity: organic, warm, and unhurried. The site uses nature photography heavily — the garden, forest, seminar rooms, and guest spaces — with generous white space and a calm typographic hierarchy that never feels rushed.
The four use types — Seminarhaus, Gästehaus, Kreativ-Ort, and Termine — each needed their own dedicated section and page, with clear visual differentiation while remaining cohesive under the overall brand. Each use type attracts a different visitor type: retreat organisers, overnight guests, artists, and course participants.
The Termine (events) section was the most complex design and development challenge. The client needed a structured course and event listing with a visual calendar view — pulling from a custom events post type — that was easy for the client team to maintain independently without developer involvement.

Development

Build highlights

01
Custom Events Calendar Plugin

Built a custom WordPress plugin to power the Terminkalender (events calendar) — handling recurring course dates, single-day events, and multi-day seminars in a clean calendar and list view. Divi's native modules couldn't support the specific date logic and display format the client required.

02
Custom Post Type for Courses & Events

Developed a custom Kurse/Termine post type with fields for date, time, instructor, category, and description — giving the client a structured backend for managing all events, courses, and seminars independently without touching page content.

03
Divi Custom Module Development

Extended the Divi builder with custom module configurations for the events listing, the venue feature cards, and the gallery sections — achieving the precise layout and display behaviour the design required beyond what Divi's standard modules provide.

04
Four-Section Venue Architecture

Built and structured the site across four distinct venue use types — Seminarhaus, Gästehaus, Kreativ-Ort, and Termine — each with dedicated pages, targeted content, and specific booking/enquiry flows tailored to different visitor types.

05
Full German Language Implementation

The entire site — all content, forms, navigation, error messages, and calendar labels — was implemented in German for the local Westerwald and wider DACH market. Contact forms, newsletter signup, and booking enquiry flows all operate in German.

06
Video Background Hero

Implemented a self-hosted video background in the hero section — a property walkthrough video (schwarzpappelhof_rundgang.mov) that loads efficiently with a poster fallback, giving first-time visitors an immediate sense of the space and atmosphere.

Problem Solving

Challenges & solutions

01
Challenge

Divi has no suitable calendar or events system

The client needed a structured events and course calendar with recurring dates, category filtering, and a dedicated Terminkalender page — none of which Divi or standard calendar plugins could deliver with the right layout and data structure.

01
Solution

Custom plugin built specifically for Schwarzpappelhof

We developed a custom WordPress plugin that registers a dedicated events post type, handles date and recurrence logic, and outputs the data in both a list view for the Termine page and a calendar view for the Terminkalender — all fully manageable by the client through the standard WordPress backend.

02
Challenge

Communicating four different use types without confusion

Schwarzpappelhof serves retreat organisers, overnight guests, creative artists, and course participants — four very different audiences arriving at the same homepage with different needs and questions.

02
Solution

Clear use-type navigation with dedicated pages

We structured the homepage to introduce each use type visually with distinct section cards, each linking to a dedicated page with targeted content, imagery, and a specific enquiry CTA. Visitors can immediately identify which offering is relevant to them and navigate directly to it.

Outcome

Results & impact

Schwarzpappelhof launched with a website that finally reflects the quality and calm of the property itself. The custom events and calendar system gives the client team full independence — new courses, seminars, and retreat dates are added directly in WordPress and appear immediately on the Termine and Terminkalender pages without any developer involvement.
The video hero, nature photography, and generous layout create an immediate sense of place — exactly what a retreat and seminar house needs from its digital presence. Visitors arrive already feeling the atmosphere of the Westerwald before they read a single word.

Takeaway

Final thoughts

Schwarzpappelhof needed calm, clarity, and a calendar system Divi couldn't provide. Custom plugin development delivered all three.

This project is a strong example of knowing when to build rather than adapt. Divi handled the design and layout beautifully — but for the events calendar, no existing plugin or Divi module did what the client needed. We built it from scratch. The result is a site the client manages completely independently, with a custom calendar system that works exactly the way the property operates.
