The Project

What we built and why

American Trench is a premium American-made apparel and accessories brand — focused on exceptional craftsmanship, generational quality, and the communities that produce it. Their range spans socks, apparel, tailoring, outerwear, accessories, and their Orig. Equip. sub-line, with partnerships including J. Press and The Holloman Capsule.

The project was pure development and functional work — no branding changes, no design invention. American Trench had a clear visual identity and we were brought in to rebuild their Shopify store layout and implement the functional and visual changes they needed across the entire store: homepage, collection pages, and product pages.

The scope covered a full layout restructure, custom product page functionality, visual improvements across all sections, and a range of store-wide functional customisations — all delivered within the Shopify ecosystem without compromising the brand’s existing aesthetic.

Design Process

How we approached it

American Trench came to us with an existing brand and an existing store — our job was not to redesign but to rebuild and enhance. The brief focused on layout improvements and functional additions that the existing theme couldn't support out of the box.

We audited the full store first — homepage sections, collection grid behaviour, product page layout, cart experience, and mobile responsiveness. From that audit we mapped every change needed: which sections required a full Liquid rebuild, which needed JavaScript enhancements, and which were pure CSS corrections.

The product page was the highest priority. American Trench has a complex product catalogue — multiple categories, multiple fits, size variants, and partnership collections — and the product page needed to handle all of that cleanly while keeping the premium brand experience intact. We rebuilt key product page sections in Liquid with custom blocks for enhanced variant selection, product details, and the brand's Made-in-USA storytelling elements.

Challenge

Making changes to a live premium store without breaking anything

American Trench is a live, revenue-generating Shopify store with an active customer base. Every layout change and functional addition had to be implemented without disrupting the existing store, breaking checkout flows, or introducing visual regressions.

Theme duplication, staged development, and section-level changes

We worked on a duplicated theme throughout the project — building and testing every change in isolation before deploying to the live store. Changes were made at the section and block level wherever possible, minimising risk and allowing easy rollback of individual components if needed.

Complex product catalogue with multiple variant structures

American Trench has a highly varied catalogue — socks with universal and sized fits, apparel with multiple fits and fabrics, tailoring, outerwear, accessories, and partnership collections — each with different variant structures that the product page needed to handle cleanly.

Flexible product page Liquid architecture

We rebuilt the product page using a modular Liquid block architecture — each block handles a specific product data type (variants, sizing, materials, Made-in-USA details) and can be toggled or reordered per product type. This means the product page adapts cleanly to every catalogue category without requiring separate templates for each.

Results & impact

American Trench's store emerged from the project with a significantly improved layout, cleaner product page experience, and a range of functional enhancements that the base theme couldn't deliver. The catalogue's complexity — spanning six product categories, multiple partnership collections, and varied variant structures — is now handled cleanly at every touchpoint.

The Liquid modular architecture means the American Trench team can manage new product types, new partnership collections, and new sections without developer involvement for standard content operations. A premium brand now has a store that matches its craftsmanship standard.

Final thoughts

American Trench makes premium American-made goods. Their Shopify store needed to match that standard. Custom Liquid development delivered it.

This project is a strong example of pure development discipline — no branding invention, no design ego, just precise Shopify Liquid development that solved real problems. A complex catalogue, a live premium store, and a client with high standards. We rebuilt what needed rebuilding, enhanced what needed enhancing, and left the brand’s identity intact. The store now works as well as the products it sells.
